About the BRCS Freeware Open / Source SIG

Purpose

This Boca Raton Computer Society, Inc.(BRCS) (http://brcs.org/) Special Interest Group (SIG) has been formed to discuss various MS Windows freeware/open-source applications and utilities, where to find them, and how to use them.

If there is a specific type of application, utility, or web application you would like to see as a subject for a SIG session, please leave a comment and we will see what can be done.

Meetings

This SIG meets on the fourth Thursday of the month, at 7:00 PM. Make sure to check the http://brcs.org/ site, in case of last minute changes, or cancellations, before attending.

The meetings take place at:
Patch Reef Park Community Center
2000 West Yamato Road (1/4 mile west of Military Trail)
Boca Raton, FL 33431

Moderator

The moderator of this SIG is Steve Costello, currently president of BRCS, and editor of Boca Bits, the monthly BRCS Newsletter. Steve has been involved with computer user groups for over 20 years, and used freeware and portable applications extensively. He thought the subject might be of interest to BRCS members, and started this SIG.

Steve's definition of freeware is a very loose definition, as you can see here:

"Freeware is any software for which I do not have to pay for use. This includes shareware and donationware that might have additional features that are only available if you pay for them, also included are web applications and browser extensions which only require registration."
Files

Presentations, notes, handouts, etc., if any, from SIG meetings will be posted, and available for download in a folder at: http://box.net/brcs-freewaresig. These presentation, notes, handouts, etc. will be under Creative Commons License, so you can modify and use them for yourself, as long as you attribute them in the manner specified.

Please let me know what you think of them, if you use them. I am always open to suggestions and constructive criticism.

When possible, links included in the files will be live; though it must be said that they were valid at the time the file was made but, may not be valid after that, as the internet changes very fast.
